Mozambique is Africa’s ultimate beach and sea destination. The country boasts an exceptionally long coastline, filled with white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, large island groups, and some of the best diving spots in the world. The reserves here are among the top destinations for spotting whale sharks, manta rays, and other rare marine creatures like the dugong. During certain seasons, you can also witness the migration of various whale species.
You may also feel the influence of past Portuguese rule in the country, whether through the spoken Portuguese language or the grand historic buildings scattered throughout from that era.
Most points of interest in Mozambique are concentrated in the coastal cities, from Maputo, the capital in the far south, to Tofo, the beach town known as “Backpacker’s Paradise,” and all the way to the far north.
As you travel north along the coast from Beira, you suddenly feel like you’re in a different country. It’s like crossing an invisible line from “”Western” South Africa to “Authentic” East Africa. If you continue north, you’ll reach the Quirimbas Archipelago – a reserve with 32 islands where you can dive or just relax for a few days in a hammock. Moving away from the coastline, you’ll discover mountainous, green, and mostly untouched landscapes, as this part of the country is hardly visited by tourists.
It’s important to note that the country is experiencing occasional conflicts between rebel groups and the government, and the route between the north and south can be dangerous at times. Therefore, it’s essential to stay updated frequently before planning your trip.
