Hey there! We wanted to take a moment to share something important with you… We love Africa, and the entire “Mzungu” initiative – the Africa Backpacking Community – stems from that passion.
There’s so much more to it than the discounts, lecture nights, and diving raffles we organize. It’s far beyond just a space for backpackers to share their knowledge and experiences from the continent.
The whole initiative is aimed at bridging the many cultures of Africa with those of us, the backpackers. It’s about teaching and expanding horizons with immense added value about the continent. We offer new perspectives on experiences during our backpacking journeys, such as volunteering, sustainable tourism, and understanding our impact on the continent during our travels.
People often ask us, “Why are you doing this?” The initiative that makes Africa more accessible to backpackers is about fostering responsible tourism.
What we want you to know is that our moral compass – understanding the continent in all its cultural layers, supporting local communities, and guiding responsible backpacking – guides every article we write, every piece of content we share, and every recommendation we give. This is the core of “Mzungu.”
From this ethos springs the community and all the good things we work on for you on the site and within the community.
In a social initiative like this, you are part of the picture too! There are many opinions and many more interesting experiences to be shared. Share them with us – articles, paragraphs, your volunteer experiences that you think others should know about, or general articles about the culture, foods, beers, mountain climbs, a specific country, a city, or an attraction – anything you’d like to share!
